Now Viewing: sonic_cdTag type: Copyright A 1993 2D Sonic platformer released for the Sega CD. Although it was released after Sonic 2, it takes place before that game and was originally intended to be a direct sequel to the first game. It is directed by Oshima Naoto with artwork by Hoshino Kazuyuki. The game had two separate soundtracks. The original JPN/EU soundtrack was composed by Hataya Naofumi and Ogata Masafumi. It was an upbeat score that made an extensive use of sampling. The past, present, and good and bad future themes of each stage have the same basic melody, but the songs are remixed to suit the state of the environment of each stage. For example, the good future songs will usually be more upbeat while the bad future songs will be darker in tone. However, the sampling was likely the reason why the North American release had a different soundtrack and the North American release was delayed so that Spencer Nilsen, David J. Young, and Mark Crew could compose a new score. The American soundtrack is darker and more subdued in tone in comparison to the original. However, the NA release preserves the original music for the past stages. Both soundtracks have their fans and the 2011 HD rerelease of the game gives players the option to switch between either one. Music from both of the soundtracks was also included in Sonic Generations. Sonic arrives at Never Lake and is shocked to see Dr. Eggman destroying the environment to suit his own ends. Eggman has chained the legendary and beautiful Little Planet to a mountain and is disrupting life there. He plans to use the time travel abilities of the planet for his own ends. A young female hedgehog named Amy Rose is kidnapped after she tries to follow Sonic who must make use of the planet's time travel abilities to save Little Planet and Amy. The game is built around time travel. In each level, there are past and future signs. Hitting the signs transports Sonic to the labeled time period. Each level also has a good and bad future. The latter is the default, but if Sonic destroys the level's robot generator the future will become good. Each period alters the environment and the enemies Sonic encounters. In the bad futures, the level will be grimy and polluted, but in the good futures, nature and technology will coexist peacefully and there will be no enemies for Sonic to battle. Later Sonic games like Sonic Next Gen and Sonic Colors would revisit some of the concepts of this game. The former's story was built around time travel, while Eggman has a similar plan in the latter game. Sonic 4 is also set to more strongly tie this game into the rest of the series and Metal Sonic is in Sonic 4 Episode 2. This game introduced Amy Rose and Metal Sonic into the Sonic canon. The former looked very different than she does presently. She resembled a smaller gender swapped pink Sonic with spiky hair as opposed to wearing her hair down starting with Sonic Adventure onwards. Sonic Generations features a chase/fight between Classic Sonic and Metal Sonic that is reminiscent of their showdown in this game. This game is also the first time Sonic spoke. If the player leaves Sonic standing for too long, he will shout, "I'm outta here!" and literally jump off the stage triggering an instant game over. The game also featured an anime style intro and ending.
